Vacancy for a General Manager's Assistant
Beer Quarry Caves, recognized as a unique heritage site in the UK is looking for an assistant to the general manager John Scott, FRSA. FRGS.
The job will entail assisting John Scott with the management and running of the caves which are open to visitors each year from April to the end of October, and with maintenance and administration of the caves during the closed period from November to April.
Visitors to the caves are escorted through the vast caverns by a team of experienced guides trained by John Scott. The deputy will be expected to carry out guide functions and assist with the organization of special tours for schools and others.
There is a Kiosk and café which are run in tandem with the tours which is separately managed.
Hours are normally 0930 to 1800 with an hour for lunch, but hours may vary with the time of year and the number of visitors. We are looking to make a permanent appointment but would consider a fixed term contract. There is a good deal of paperwork to be attended to and the deputy would be expected to assist with this. A valid UK Driving license is required.
The caves were opened to the public by John Scott over 30 years ago. An ambitious development programme is now planned which will include fund raising locally and nationally to create a new visitors centre. The deputy will be expected to participate in and contribute to the development programme in the coming months and years.
Some knowledge of the media, especially locally would be of considerable help, as would a knowledge of and interest in history and archaeology in the region and in the area of East Devon.
Salary is by negotiation but will start in the region of £20,000 p.a. for a suitable candidate. Paid annual leave of 20 days is included.
